Supercars Championship, the Aussie motorsport series, is set to launch its own esports championship in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the coronavirus crisis forcing Supercars Championship to postpone the first three events of its season, organisers have turned to the virtual world to keep the engines running.

The Supercars Eseries will use sim racing platform iRacing, and will see teams compete and race weekly in virtual versions of their real-life cars, including accurately reproduced liveries and branding.

Supercars Eseries will be broadcast live on Fox Sports, Australian sports streaming service Kayo, and free on Supercars’ official website, Twitch channel, and social media.

Details of teams and drivers will be announced in the coming weeks, and current plans will see the Eseries championship wrap up before the real-world Supercars Championship is set to resume in June.

The extremely close relationship between sim racing and real-world motorsports makes the migration to the virtual world relatively hassle-free compared to other sports, so we expect to see other organisations follow suit.

Though, given many experts are now saying the pandemic may last until next Spring, we do think organisers are being rather too optimistic in thinking the real-world Supercars Championship will be able to resume in June!
