German Formula E driver Daniel Abt has lost his seat with Audi’s official factory team after cheating in the Formula E Race at Home Challenge.
In a clear illustration of the dangers of traditional sportspeople not taking esports seriously, two-time Formula E race winner Daniel Abt has lost his seat with Audi’s official team after organising a “prank” that backfired.
Launched in response to the suspension of the 2019-2020 Formula E season due to the COVID-19 crisis, the rFactor 2-based Formula E Race at Home Challenge, is part of a fundraising partnership with UNICEF.
Abt is a well-known driver in Formula E, having started all 62 races since its 2014 Beijing launch. He initially drove for his family’s racing team, Abt Sportsline, but entered a partnership with German car manufacturer Audi in July 2017, joining its official factory team.
The controversy involved the fifth stint of the Race at Home Challenge, when Abt came up with the idea of getting a top sim driver to race in his place, to “prank” the other drivers, and then create content around the drama.
In the event, Austrian sim racer Lorenz “Lozbert” Hörzing masqueraded as Abt, and drove well, before crashing with Stoffel Vandoorne while fighting for the lead, eventually finishing third. The high standard of driving and good finishing position caused other drivers to suspect foul play, and organisers soon found “Abt” had used a different IP address than usual.
Abt released a video statement explaining and apologising for his actions,
“This is a game, a simulation, but it has nothing to do with motor racing, with what I usually do. Of course, they attempted to make it realistic, but it definitely is anything but what a real Formula E car is – how it drives, how it feels. Also, races are unrealistic. That became evident for everyone in the first [race at home challenge] race by what happened on track. Accidents happened en masse, everybody drove as they pleased, and the game had bugs.
“To be honest, I believe from an outside perspective it was not what constitutes a real Formula E race, the essence of professional racing. Our intention going into the races was primarily to entertain the fans at home rather than racing for results.”
“I can understand that we took it too far with our idea. In retrospect, we did not think about the seriousness and consequences of this and made an enormous mistake. I stand by my mistake and accept the consequences for what I’ve done and want to emphasize that I’m relieved that the sim racings guys haven’t been dragged into the scandal too much. It’s my responsibility and I’ll bear it.”
Although the series is for entertainment purposes only, with no points or prize money being awarded, and Abt admitted the “prank” immediately, Audi has taken a dim view of Abt’s shenanigans, and kicked him off the team.
In a statement Audi explained:
“Daniel Abt, after six years and 63 races, will no longer drive for Audi in Formula E. He has been part of our Formula E team since the debut of the racing series in September 2014, and our official factory driver since the autumn of 2017. In Mexico and at our home round in Berlin, Abt took two fantastic Formula E victories and scored a total of ten podium results. With Daniel, we celebrated great success and made enormous strides with Formula E. We are thankful for our time together and look back on it proudly.
“However, integrity, transparency, and consistent compliance with applicable rules, especially with regards to the past, are top priorities for us at Audi. We stand by our culture of tolerating mistakes. However, the incidents that took place during the ‘Race at Home Challenge’ sim racing series were not a mistake, but a conscious decision to go against the rules.
“That is what makes the big difference for us. Therefore, unfortunately, we had no other alternative than suspending Daniel Abt.”
AYO.NEWS says:
Though it’s very likely that Abt didn’t intend anything nefarious in this incident, his statement makes it clear that he doesn’t take esports seriously, so Audi’s decisive actions should be applauded. With the esports industry growing rapidly, it’s critical to protect the integrity of all competitive play, whether there’s prize money or betting involved or not.

The EA SPORTS™ FIFA 21 Challenge has smashed the viewership record, with an Average Minute Audience of over 250K.
A one-day esports tournament that paired top global professional footballers with the world’s best FIFA players, the EA SPORTS™ FIFA 21 Challenge drew an average minute audience (AMA) of 254,057 with a total watch time of 1,024,696 hours, making the event the most-watched EA operated esports broadcast in history.
In fact, the broadcast more than doubled the viewership metric set by the next most-watched EA operated FIFA event, the FIFA Global Series FUT Champions Cup: Barcelona, which took place over multiple days in January 2018 and registered an AMA of 92,678.
During the competition, four esports players paired with four professional footballers from international clubs Liverpool, West Ham United, Inter Milan, and Borussia Dortmund, clashed on October 29 for the EA SPORTS FIFA 21 Challenge.
Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fnatic’s Tekkz took home the trophy and won $20,000 on behalf of their selected charities
In addition to incorporating celebrity participation to reach non-traditional gaming audiences, the EA SPORTS FIFA 21 Challenge was the first event to utilize FIFA Global Series Viewership Rewards, creating an interactive broadcast for viewers with in-game benefits for watching to further drive engagement and subsequent play time.
Reflecting on the event EA SPORTS FIFA Commissioner, Brent Koning, said:
“EA SPORTS FIFA is woven into the fabric of football culture. Bringing professional footballers and our esports pros together creates entertainment that sets our tournaments apart.
“The success of the FIFA 21 Challenge reinforces our strategy and vision for broadening the esports audience, creating content for our fans, and underscores the value of entertainment-driven events that branch outside of traditional esports.”
The FIFA 21 Challenge was a part of a series of EA SPORTS FIFA 21 Global Series pre-season invitationals, featuring notable influencers, footballers, and FIFA pros, in partnership with the interactive entertainment world’s biggest video streaming and content platforms.
It’s a nod to EA’s renewed competitive gaming strategy, which leverages the convergence of traditional sports, competitive gaming, and pop culture to create new, engaging, and accessible broadcasts for diverse audiences.
AYO.NEWS says:
Viewership figures like this illustrate just how integrated esports, especially FIFA, is becoming in mainstream football culture, and the growth looks set to continue, and reflects well on EA’s competitive gaming strategy. Last month, EA announced improvements and a bigger prize pool for the upcoming esports season.

Singapore-based esports organisation Team SMG has partnered with sports and entertainment agency SPORTFIVE.
The agency, which will act as Team SMG’s commercial sales representative, will leverage its global network and expertise to develop sponsorship packages for both endemic and non-endemic brands.
Discussing the collaboration General Manager of Team SMG, Orrin Xu, said:
“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far with our teams, and are ready to take the next step to carve out a niche for ourselves in the esports world and build our presence beyond South East Asia.
“Partnering with SPORTFIVE will allow us to access greater commercial opportunities while optimising the growth potential of Team SMG, and we look forward to exciting collaborations with brands that will bring value to our fans.”
While Managing Director – South East Asia at SPORTFIVE, Malcolm Thorpe, added:
“With esports showing a clear rise in audience, reach and commercialisation, it is clear that esports is a global industry that is here to stay.
“Our expansion into esports has delivered partnerships for both endemic and non-endemic brands, allowing them to connect with the world of gaming and its massive and highly engaged audience. We are confident that our track record and global network will help bring Team SMG to the next level.”
Team SMG (Still Moving Under Gunfire), rose to prominence after winning the 2017 Arena of Valor International Championship. In February this year, the organisation acquired Malaysian Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) team, Makan Cendol, while over the last few months it has found success with Riot Games’ Valorant – winning two back-to-back titles.
The organisation already has commercial partnerships in place with well-established brands including Under Armour, Nescafé, and U Mobile.
SPORTFIVE (previously Lagardère Sports and Entertainment) has 50 years of experience in traditional and access to over 60,000 rights holders, brands, hospitality clients, and broadcasters globally.
The agency is now investing in its esports services, and has partnered with leading publishers, event organisers, and teams – including Riot Games, RFRSH Entertainment, T1 Entertainment & Sports (T1), and PUBG – and its esports portfolio includes sales and strategic consulting for major brands including Nike, BMW, SAP, Shell, and Foot Locker.
AYO.NEWS says:
With esports now firmly in the mainstream, and investors looking for organisations to more effectively monetise, it’s only natural that more attention is being paid to commercial sponsorships and merchandising – and agencies like SPORTFIVE, with their extensive contacts, will be key to turning non-endemic brands into big spenders in the esports space.

Natus Vincere is the latest esports organisation to partner with fan engagement platform Socios.com.
Ukraine-based Natus Vincere (Na’Vi) says it will be launching a Fan Token on the blockchain-based fan voting and rewards application from Malta-based Chiliz.
By purchasing $NAVI tokens, fans will gain voting rights, and be able to influence selected decisions made by the organisation.
5 million $NAVI fan tokens will be made available at launch, with a limited number sold at just $1 USD each during a flash sale to get the ball rolling.
Discussing plans CEO of Natus Vincere, Yevhen ‘HarisPilton’ Zolotarov, said:
“What we are launching today is the next eventual step in switching to a new dynamic of interacting with our devoted audience. Socios.com creates an opportunity to become an actual and viable part of NAVI, as $NAVI tokens are the real way to influence our decisions. In fact, it is a way of making all the crucial decisions together.
“We truly hope that our #NAVINATION members will enjoy the opportunity to make a real difference with NAVI during the next few years.”
While Founder and CEO of Chiliz and Socios.com, Alexandre Dreyfus, added:
“NAVI’s ‘Born to Win’ mentality has already forged a really strong alliance with their fanbase. The organisation has always been focused on creating a special bond with players through YouTube vlogs and social media activity, but now NAVI are taking things to the next level. $NAVI Fan Tokens are going to give fans a real say in the future of the organisation and real decision making power, not to mention the chance to win some amazing rewards too.”
Thus far, Socios.com is dominated by football clubs (Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, AS Roma, Atletico Madrid, to name but a few), with Na’Vi becoming only the third esports organisation to join, after OG and Team Heretics. Mixed martial arts organisation UFC is also partnered with the app.
AYO.NEWS says:
With so many things competing for fans’ attention, driving long-term, sustainable fan engagement is critical for the commercial viability of esports and traditional sports organisations alike.
While Socios.com has attracted a lot of attention, other platforms like Blocksport are also making headway – indeed, Russian organisation Virtus.pro announced it had selected the platform earlier this week.
Meanwhile Gen.G Esports recently partnered with blockchain network Rally to launch its own CS:GO crypto fan token called GG Strike Coin.

Brazil-based esports organisation FURIA has announced online poker operator PokerStars as its new “master sponsor.”
The partnership makes more sense when you consider that André Akkari, a co-owner of FURIA, is one of the most successful Brazilian professional poker players, and a PokerStars Ambassador. As part of the collaboration, Akkari will be leading a new team of poker streamers, including top Latin American female poker professional Lali Tournier, and Rafa Moraes.
Financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
Commenting on the partnership Akkari said:
“Poker plays a natural part in Furia’s DNA. It’s all about making optimal decisions in the moment for long-term results. The partnership is a natural step for expansion as we look to move beyond eSports.”
While Associate Director of Public Relations at PokerStars, Rebecca McAdam-Willets, added:
“The team at Furia work very hard, lead by example, and are always looking to improve and evolve.
“This approach, as well as their general ethos, sits extremely well with what we aim for at PokerStars. It will be exciting for us to see what we can bring our community and how we can engage new audiences by working together with such a passionate team.”
FURIA is well-known for fielding a particularly potent Counter-Strike: Global Offensive teams, and recently acquired a slot in the Brazilian League of Legends Championship (CBLoL) franchise.
The organisation also has commercial partnerships in place with Aim Lab, AOC, GamersCard, HyperX, Legion by Lenovo, Nike, Nvidia, Rivalry, and Unilever.
In April, FURIA also teamed up with Swiss blockchain-based mobile app solution Blocksport to improve fan engagement.
AYO.NEWS says:
While we see partnerships between betting operators and esports organisations, this relationship seems set to take collaboration to a new level, so it will be interesting to see how it pans out, and if it will inspire other esports organisations to get involved with traditional gaming.

G2 Esports’ partnership with Brandgenuity has resulted in three licensing deals, covering apparel, collectibles, and publishing.
The partnership between the Berlin-based esports organisation and the brand licensing agency, which was announced in May this year, has led to agreements with Difuzed, The Koyo Store, and Merch Management.
Under the licensing deals, Difuzed will be providing multiple drops of streetwear, available through G2’s new online store.
Meanwhile, The Koyo Store will create a range of G2-branded collectible logo and player cards, pins, keychains, and coins. These will be available through The Koyo Store website and selected stores in Europe, North America, and Australia.
Finally, Merch Management will be offering print-on-demand apparel via Amazon. A range of branded stationary, including notepads, colouring books, journals, and sketchbooks, may also be made available via Amazon in the UK, US, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, and Spain.
Commenting on the news CEO & Founder of G2 Esports, Carlos Rodrigues, said:
“No other esports organization is currently set up to take advantage of the power of their brands like G2 is right now. With the addition of these three licensing partners, G2 will be in prime position to create some amazing collaborations for our fans to enjoy.”
While Managing Director, Brandgenuity Europe, Teri Niadna, added:
“We are thrilled to be launching our program with these three partners, who will bring their expertise, unique design language and distribution to bear.
“This brand has everything we look for to build a great licensing program: double-digit growth trajectory, a distinctive personality and truly passionate fans.”
G2 Esports currently competes in League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rainbow Six Siege, Valorant, Rocket League, Fortnite, and sim racing.
Brandgenuity has offices in New York, London, Munich, and Hong Kong, and an impressive list of major clients including Arm & Hammer, BMW, Budweiser, Corona, Covergirl, Hawaiian Tropic, and White Castle.
AYO.NEWS says:
As we’ve noted many times recently, merchandise is rapidly becoming a significant revenue source for large esports organisations. To be honest, in today’s print-on-demand world, with services like Amazon, Zazzle, Redbubble, Spreadshirt etc, perhaps the most surprising thing is that so many organisations still aren’t effectively merchandising their brands.

After a successful start last month, event 2 of the F1 Esports Pro Series presented by Aramco, gets underway this afternoon.
Event 1 was dominated by Alfa Romeo’s Jarno Opmeer, who secured two victories, while reigning champion David Tonizza also picked up a win for Ferrari.
Event 2 will get underway at Zandvoort, a brand new circuit for the F1 Esports Pro Series, before moving on to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. On Thursday drivers will be going wheel to wheel at the Red Bull Ring, to round off the first half of the series.
Live racing will be streamed online via F1’s official channels on Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and Huya, and broadcast on television by international partners including ESPN (US), Sky (UK), and Ziggo (Netherlands), while Qualifying show content will be streamed exclusively on Twitch, YouTube, and Huya (China).
Drivers competing in this year’s Pro Series have also combined to create the ultimate gaming playlist for F1 Tracks, featuring tracks from KAM-BU, Nothing But Thieves, You Me At Six, The Weeknd, Queen, Kings of Leon, and even Elvis Presley.
The competition’s stars conveyed the excitement of this year’s Pro Series, with Marcel Keifer, who visited the Red Bull Performance Centre in October, saying:
“I’ve been to the Red Bull Performance Centre with the team. It was a really great experience, because we got to know more stuff about all the other areas that we don’t usually cover in our Esports training, like the physical activities, scheduling and how important it is to sleep and get physical exercises that can really increase your performance. It helped us a lot, and I think it already shows we’re in a good position for the season.”
And, Dani Bereznay, giving his view on the main competitors for the title:
“I think it’s good to be the team to beat but Alpha Tauri with Joni Tormala and Red Bull with Marcel Kiefer and Frederik Rasmussen are an insanely fast pair. Also, Ferrari with Enzo Bonito and the former champion, David Tonizza, are really big threats.
“If you see the timings and not just the results, there is maximum one tenth of a second that separates us from most of the field. It’s basically one apex, one little mistake, and the championship can turn upside down pretty quickly. That’s why esports is so good! We definitely don’t treat it like we’ve already won and we definitely won’t let off as the others are super motivated.”
AYO.NEWS says:
F1 Esports has gone from strength to strength this year, benefiting from the surging popularity of sim racing in general – something catalysed by the significantly increased mainstream coverage during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Recently, AYO.NEWS’ very own Simona Pinterova caught up with Julian Tan, Head of Digital Business Initiatives & Esports at Formula 1, to find out how the iconic racing organisation has expanded its esports offering, and what the future has in store.
