CRYPTO EXCHANGE COINBENE INSISTS DOWNTIME AND DELAYS NOT DUE TO HACK

Published

Major cryptocurrency exchange CoinBene denies hack, insisting maintenance downtime and processing delays due to preventative measures.

Major crypto exchange CoinBene is denying it has suffered a hack, despite processing delays and unusually long maintenance downtime.

The exchange, which is currently ranked 4th in terms of adjusted daily trade volume by CoinMarketCap, has stated that there is no need for users to worry, and that is actions are preventative rather than reactive.

Community members began fearing the worst when delays started manifesting in the processing of both deposits and withdrawals, but the company has now said the problems are due to the urgent updating of the exchange’s wallets in response to warnings of thefts received from other exchanges.

The company has said that Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Tether (USDT) deposits are already working again, and others will follow shortly.

CoinBene has found itself under the spotlight recently, after blockchain transaction records showing suspiciously large outgoing transactions raised some eyebrows, including those of Bitwise Asset Management, who reported the exchange’s activities as ‘suspicious’ to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

After several high profile attacks, like that perpetrated against New Zealand-based exchange Cryptopia, which resulted in the service being down for weeks (read more), the crypto community is jittery. As recently as 24th March, Singapore-based DragonEx was subject to a hack, though further details hadn’t been released at the time or writing.

AYO.NEWS says:

Whilst news stories like this are concerning, it does illustrates that at least some exchanges are stepping up their game to prevent hacks, sharing information and taking immediate preventative measures. It’s also reassuring to see CoinBene reiterate their guarantee that any assets lost to a hack will be reimbursed to affected customers.

4 BILLION DIGITAL CATS: CRYPTOKITTIES CONFIRMED FOR MALTA SUMMIT

Published

on

Blockchain based breedable cat collectibles game CryptoKitties confirmed for Social Impact workshop at Malta AI and Blockchain Summit.

CryptoKitties, the blockchain-based virtual cat collectibles, will be participating in the Social Impact workshop at the Malta AI and Blockchain Summit this May.

If at this point you’re asking; “what the hell are CryptoKitties”, let me fill you in. So, its basically a blockchain-based cat-themed game in which people collect digital, breedable cats. It was built on the Ethereum network, and is the perfect example of digital scarcity in action – allowing people to collect and own rare digital items in much the same way as offline collectors do.

Anyone who is old enough to remember the Beanie Babies craze in the late 1990s – imagine that, but in the digital world, and with an incredible 4 billion unique cats potentially available to collect. There’s 4 billion because each ‘parent’ cat has a 256-bit genome… so their offspring has 4 billion possible variations.

It doesn’t take much effort of imagination to see there’s an incredible commercial opportunity there – tapping into the age-old desire to collect and own rare things, but with the convenience of the digital ecosphere.

Held from the 23rd to 24th of May, the spring edition of the Malta AI and Blockchain Summit is expected to attract a global crowd of exhibitors from the AI, quantum tech, IoT and big data fields, and will host several conference and workshops.

AYO.NEWS says:

The idea of true digital ownership (i.e. where you can even move and trade your assets between platforms), has the potential to truly revolutionise not just the gaming and collectible worlds, but the entire global economy. Recently we caught up with Sergei Labutin, Executive Director of Ether Dale, the Tallinn-based developer and publisher of unique blockchain games, to discuss just this – you can read the full interview here.

VIETNAM TO GET ITS FIRST LEGAL CRYPTO EXCHANGE?

Published

on

Swiss-Vietnamese commercial partnership could open first legal cryptocurrency exchange in the southeast Asian country.

A partnership between Linh Thanh Group, Vietnam’s largest distribution company, and KRONN Ventures AG, a Swiss blockchain company, may result in Vietnam’s first legal crypto exchange.

According to a statement from KRONN, the companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the production of cryptocurrency and the establishment of a cryptocurrency exchange in Vietnam. And, critically, they say they have already obtained a license from the Vietnamese authorities.

The development follows last October’s news that KRONN Ventures AG had formed a consortium with financial committees from five Asian countries consisting of Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, with a view to building an international wiring system using blockchain technology.

Apparently, following the Vietnam deal, the other countries in the consortium are now concerned they will lose the opportunity to kickstart the Asia-wide transnational blockchain-based wiring system.

KRONN Ventures is based in Zug, Switzerland – part of the so-called ‘Crypto Valley’ (see CRYPTO VALLEY SEES DRAMATIC GROWTH DESPITE ‘CRYPTO WINTER’) region that straddles Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as is known to be collaborating with London’s King’s College regarding AI research.

AYO.NEWS says:

If the joint KRONN-Linh Thanh venture really does have approval from Vietnamese authorities, this news marks a significant change for the previously crypto-hostile Vietnamese government. Until now cryptocurrencies were effectively outlawed, with the country’s financial regulator, the State Securities Commission, prohibiting businesses in the country from engaging “in any issuance, transaction or brokerage activities related to cryptocurrencies.” A temporary ban on the import of crypto mining machines has also been in place since summer 2018.
