SOON TO RELAUNCH G4 PARTNERS WITH WWE FOR VIDEO GAME COMPETITION SERIES

Soon to relaunch gaming network G4 is teaming up with WWE for a new video gaming competition, set to premiere this fall.

The program will be hosted by WWE Superstar Xavier Woods AKA Austin Creed, G4’s first-announced on-air talent, and will pit some of the biggest content creators in gaming against each other, playing some of the most popular video games to settle scores…with scores.

“Getting a shot to be a G4 cast member is incredible and humbling in itself, and I couldn’t be more excited for the chance to have my own show,” said Xavier Woods.  “Not only will I host but I’ll also have a pivotal role to play as the top personalities in gaming try to settle their beef.”

The announcement comes as G4 begins its Epic April celebration, a tradition started during its first run on-air in which the network unveils an absurd amount of talent and programming announcements, runs big giveaways, and pulls off more-than-a-few-calls-from-HR-inducing stunts.

Another major G4 announcement will take place during WWE’s UUDD WrestleMania Gaming Event premiering Saturday April 10th at 11am ET on the UpUpDownDown YouTube Channel.

WWE will serve as an Executive Producer for the program. As part of the joint partnership, G4 and WWE will take the program to market together.

Los Angeles-based G4 originally launched as a video games and gaming culture channel way back in April 2002, but ceased operations at the end of 2014. Now the channel is set to be resurrected by Spectacor Gaming, which owns and operates a growing portfolio of gaming and esports assets – including Overwatch League’s Philadelphia Fusion and T1 Entertainment & Sports.

AYO.NEWS says:

The world has changed a lot since 2002, that’s for sure, but it’s fantastic to see G4 set for a comeback and packing in the big names already. G4 seems certain to get a boost from nostalgic 30 and 40 somethings, but the question is, will it manage to resonate with the Gen-Zs? We’re looking forward to seeing what the G4 team can do.

TWITCH BREAKS VIEWERSHIP RECORD AS MILLIONS SEEK DIGITAL SOLACE

mm

Published

on

Data presented by Finbold indicates that video game live streaming service Twitch attained a record milestone of 3.03 million viewers in April 2021 based on a monthly seven-day average.

The viewership figures represent a growth of 22.17% between April 2020 and April 2021. Between January and April, the number has grown by 4.12%. The lowest viewership figure was in July 2020 at 2.11 million.

Pandemic fuels Twitch viewership numbers

The report further highlights factors that have fuelled the growth in Twitch viewership over the past year. According to the research report:

“The record growth in Twitch viewers compliments the fact that most people have turned to digital platforms for entertainment in the course of the ongoing health crisis. Most people turned to video gaming platforms for entertainment. The reliance on digital entertainment pushed Twitch viewers to new heights. With most authorities still imposing lockdown and stay-at-home orders, many people are still seeking solace from digital platforms, and Twitch might benefit further.”

Elsewhere, the number of Twitch streamers has also been on the rise, growing by 29.92% between April 2020 and April 2021 from 93,750 to 121,808. The platform recorded the highest number of streamers in February 2021 at 122,623. The lowest number of streamers was in September at 91,861.

Furthermore, the analysis puts the Twitch viewership numbers into perspective as some parts of the world return to normalcy from the health crisis. According to the report:

“Amid the growing Twitch viewership, projections indicated that the numbers might slow down as the world returns to normalcy with the coronavirus vaccines’ rollout, especially in the U.S. However, the viewership does not reflect the ongoing vaccination, an indicator that Twitch is making inroads to retain users on the platform.”

With Twitch continuing to add more viewers amid the coronavirus pandemic, the challenge will be on maintaining the users. Twitch’s approach towards handling the post-pandemic era will be instrumental.
