Maximilian Schrems is an Austrian lawyer, author and privacy activist. He is best known for his for campaigns highlighting the privacy violations of social media giant Facebook. Most recently, his name has been associated with the ruling of the European Court of Justice which invalidated the Privacy Shield framework for not providing adequate protection for data transfers.
This judgement creates issues in the field of data protection for European companies, including iGaming operators, who are using services of U.S.-registered cloud service providers.
The event will consist of three parts:
- Keynote speech by Max Schrems
- Panel discussion for which Peter Ekmark (CEO at Internet Vikings) and Stefan Thelberg (CEO at Holm Security) will join Mr. Schrems

More about Max Schrems:
In 2011, while on a study abroad program at Santa Clara University in California’s Silicon Valley, Max attended a lecture by Facebook’s privacy lawyer. The lawyer had little awareness of data protection laws across the Atlantic. This promoted Schrems to author a college essay about Facebook’s failure to comprehend European privacy restrictions. That’s how it all started.
Maximilian Schrems is an Austrian activist and author who became known for campaigns against Facebook for its privacy violations, including violations of European privacy laws and the alleged transfer of personal data to the US National Security Agency. He has also filed complaints under GDPR against Amazon, Apple, YouTube and other companies, in the fight for user privacy protection against violations from big tech.
In 2017, he founded NOYB (none of your business) – European Center for Digital Rights – a non-profit organization based in Vienna, Austria, committed to launching strategic court cases and media initiatives in support of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the proposed ePrivacy Regulation, and information privacy in general.
