DISCORD SEALS DEAL WITH SONY FOR PLAYSTATION INTEGRATION
Sony’s gaming console brand, PlayStation, has announced a partnership with gamer-focused social and voice chat platform Discord.
The collaboration will see Discord connected to the PlayStation Network, while Sony Interactive Entertainment has also invested in Discord’s Series H funding round, becoming a minority shareholder.
Although few details have been released about the partnership, the official announcement said Discord and PlayStation will be bringing “experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year” – suggesting a fairly deep and wide integration is on the cards.
Sony’s arch rival, Microsoft, had been in talks regarding a potential acquisition of Discord, but reports say they ended without a deal. According to the Wall Street Journal, the talks had valued Discord at around $10B USD, and several companies were involved in the discussions.
Discord is also thought to be planning an IPO for some point in the not too distant future.
