Danish armed forces team up with CS:GO teams, including Astralis, and figure out esports players make better recruits.
Danish Defence – the unified armed forces of Denmark – have been working with CS:GO teams in the country to study whether gamers make better recruits.
According to Danish-focused English-language publication The Local, the Danish armed forces were keen to find out if pro esports players had better reaction times and situation awareness than the average Joe from the street.
Apparently, the armed forces tested several esports teams, including CS:GO champions Astralis and concluded that the players did indeed achieve more promising results than average. With The Local quoting Major Anders Bech, head of section with the Danish Ministry of Defence’s Personnel Agency, as saying:
“Gamers have certain skills in being and remaining calm under pressure, faster reactions than other young people, quick decision making, good teamwork skills, orientation and strong ability to visualise,”
As a result, it seems that Danish Defence is looking to partner with national esports federation Esport Danmark, to target recruitment drives at avid video gamers.
AYO.NEWS says:
Given that today’s soldiers have to handle so much technology, and video games are so realistic, its perhaps unsurprising that the militaries of developed countries are starting to take a big interest in esports.
In fact, just days ago the Daily Mail reported that a British rifleman had been reprimanded for going on a ‘killing spree’ while engaged in a virtual battlefield exercise – ‘shooting dead’ one of his comrades and destroying several virtual vehicles. The soldiers defence was that he was fed up with playing computer games instead of training for real outside!
It’s also not much of a stretch to think that people who like watching modern combat for entertainment, may also be more easily persuaded to join up. Indeed, last year the US Air Force sponsored Cloud9’s CS:GO team, and its safe to expect more such partnerships in the future.
