Bitcoin seasteading couple on run, facing death penalty, after Royal Thai Navy declares ocean home illegal and dangerous.
Got rich from crypto? Dream of living in a libertarian utopia, far from the reach of any government? Be careful! A couple who used their bitcoin fortune to fund a ‘seastead’ home off the coast of Thailand are on the run under the threat of death.
Apparently, Nadia Thepdet (aka. bitcoingirlthailand) and Chad Elwartowski, constructed a ‘seastead’ (think a room perched on top of an oil rig-type platform), roughly 13 miles off the Thai coast, in what they naively assumed were international waters.
The couple, who made their fortune as early bitcoin investors, planned to live on the tiny platform out and sea, beyond the authority of any government. Quite what they intended to do all day on the tiny artificial island is anyone’s guess – but each to their own.
Unfortunately, the Royal Thai navy is seeing things quite differently, claiming the couple has threatened the territorial integrity of Thailand and constructed a navigation danger to vessels in the area – and has said they could face the death penalty. Fortunately, when the navy rocked up to arrest the pair, they were away on the mainland.
“กฎหมายรัฐชายฝั่ง”การตรวจพบสิ่งก่อสร้างเพื่อเป็นที่พักอาศัยในทะเลหรือ Seasteading บริเวณนอกชายฝั่งจังหวัดภูเก็ต ปรากฏว่าสิ่งก่อสร้าง นั้น ยังอยู่ในเขตพื้นที่บริเวณเขตต่อเนื่อง (ในเขต ๒๔ ไมล์ทะเลจากฝั่ง) ที่ประเทศไทยในฐานะรัฐชายฝั่ง ยังมีสิทธิผลประโยชน์ ที่จะแสวงหาเพื่อผลประโยชน์ของประเทศชาติ เช่น การทำการประมง การดำเนินการด้านศุลกากร เป็นต้น.ทั้งนี้หากผู้ใดจะมาดำเนินการสร้างสิ่งก่อสร้างในเขตพื้นที่ดังกล่าว จะต้องมีการขออนุญาตรัฐชายฝั่ง โดยกลุ่มคนดังกล่าว มิได้มีการดำเนินการขออนุญาต ต่อทางการของประเทศไทยแต่อย่างใด รวมทั้งยังมีการเชิญชวนให้กลุ่มคนที่มีความสนใจ ที่จะเข้ามาพักหรือสร้างสิ่งก่อสร้างเข้ามาใช้บริการได้ .ซึ่งจากพฤติกรรมที่เกิดขึ้น แสดงออกถึงความไม่เคารพกฎหมายหรือไม่สนใจประเทศไทยในฐานะรัฐชายฝั่งแต่อย่างใด.จากเหตุผลและความจำเป็นตามที่กล่าวมาในข้างต้น กองทัพเรือ จึงมีความจำเป็น ต้องเข้ามาแก้ไขปัญหาดังกล่าว โดยการประสานกับหน่วยงานต่างๆ ที่มีหน้าที่ในการบังคับ ใช้กฎหมายเข้ามาดำเนินการจัดการด้านกฎหมายที่เกี่ยวข้อง เพื่อไม่ให้ปัญหาดังกล่าว ขยายวงกว้างและยากที่จะแก้ไข รวมทั้งแสดงถึงการมีสิทธิของรัฐชายฝั่งที่ต้องปกป้องรักษา ผลประโยชน์ของชาติให้ดำรงคงอยู่ ผู้ใดจะมาละเมิดมิได้

Now, according to reports, the couple is in the run and trying to find a way out of Thailand – with Chad, an American citizen, hoping that if they can get back to the US, Nadia, who is Thai, can claim asylum.
While not a new concept, having been tried many times before on anything from ships to abandoned oil platforms and sea forts (see Sealand for a particularly interesting variation, where someone actually declared their own country and was able to get away with it for years – including fending off an ‘invasion’), seasteading is said to be experiencing a resurgence, with many crypto investors being particularly enthusiastic!
Thepdet and Elwartowski’s seastead was constructed by a company called Ocean Builders, who seem to be planning more small clusters of homes on the waves. However, others have more ambitious plans, with some even proposing whole offshore floating cities, well and truly in international waters – ie. over 200 miles offshore – and well outside the control of any national governments.
I can already see gaming operators visualising a floating Las Vegas, free from rules and taxes!
