Gen. G esports org. raises $46 million from investors inc. Will Smith and Keisuke Honda, and appoints new President of Strategic Partnerships.
Gen.G, the global esports organisation, has announced an impressive $46 million funding round, including investments from the Dreamers Fund – set up by Hollywood A-lister Will Smith and Japanese soccer player Keisuke Honda.
Other notable investors in this latest round include Dennis Wong, minority owner of Los Angeles Clippers, Michael Zeisser, former Chairman of US Investments Alibaba Group, and David Rogier, MasterClass Co-Founder and CEO.
As to be expected, other VC firms also got in on the action with investments from New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Conductive Ventures, Battery Ventures, Canaan Partners, and SVB Capital, in addition to Stanford University.
The esports organisation is building quite a high-profile backing, with Smith and Honda joining two-time NBA Champion and current Gen.G Player Management Advisor Chris Bosh.
Commenting on the Dreamers Fund investment, former AC Milan and Japan midfielder, Keisuke Honda, said:
“I am excited that Dreamers Fund, the fund that I co-launched with Will Smith, is now investing in Gen.G. Esports is not yet big in Japan, but we are seeing tremendous growth there and globally, which is very positive.
“We decided to invest in Gen. G because of their incredible team and grand vision to become a leader in the space. We truly look forward to working with Gen.G to boost the esports industry around the world.”
According to Gen.G, the new capital will help the organisation expand its global footprint, help develop Gen.G’s youth esports academy program, and support the launch of the organisation’s new Los Angeles HQ (planned to open in July this year).
Thanking the latest round of enthusiastic investors Gen.G’s CEO, Chris Park, said:
“We are grateful for the support of a remarkable group of investors that is as diverse as the future of esports itself. Our partners in this round share Gen.G’s mission to reimagine sports entertainment as only an authentically global esports organisation can.”
Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), Gen.G’s banking partner, helped find investors provided counsel, and is expected to work with the esports organisation on a variety of upcoming events and content over the next couple of years.
Discussing the funding round Chief Operating Officer at Gen.G, Arnold Hur, said:
“This is an incredible step for Gen.G and the vision we have for the organisation.
“With the support of our new investors, we’re excited to bring several priorities to fruition including our LA headquarters, our continued expansion into China, our always evolving player development academy programs and a big priority for us in 2020, which is hosting Dynasty matches in Seoul! There is a lot of work to be done, and we are very proud to have these investors on our team.”
At the same time as announcing the new funding, Gen.G also revealed that Martin Kim, former director of international business development and marketing at Major League Baseball (MLB), has been appointed as President of Strategic Partnerships. Kim has also previously managed corporate and international partnerships for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

AYO.NEWS says:
Gen.G is certainly proving its adept at big business as well as esports, and drawing in celebrities like Will Smith is going to be a valuable PR boost for the organisation. With such significant financial backing it seems likely the Gen.G will be eying a pricey Call of Duty franchise slot. Its also interesting to see yet more traditional sports business professionals, like Martin Kim, make the move to esports – well, they do say “follow the money.”
