Gun toting libertarian, tax fugitive, presidential candidate and outspoken crypto advocate John McAfee has said the “world is collapsing” and urged people to forget crypto and buy peanut butter.
During a 14 April Aufhebunga Bunga podcast, McAfee told host Phil Cunliffe, a senior lecturer at the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent, that the unprecedented enforced lockdown of the world economy, and the massive fiscal stimulus programs central banks are embarking on, would result in the collapse of fiat currencies within two months.
Specifically, McAfee said:
“Nothing like this in the history of humankind has ever occurred, where the entire globe is locked down. I wish I could tell you what’s going to happen. I don’t know. Neither does anybody […] I can tell you this, that all fiat currencies will collapse.”
When asked what advice he would give to those struggling to survive the lockdown, who couldn’t afford to invest in Bitcoin (BTC) or other cryptocurrencies, McAfee said:
“Buy food and water, nothing else matters. I do not know, neither do you, neither does anybody know what’s going to happen to cryptocurrency or fiat currency. All I know is the world is collapsing, and it will, absolutely, collapse. Food keeps you alive if you have enough […] Peanut butter, raisins and bread, you can live on that shit for years.”
McAfee went on to argue, as increasing numbers of people are, that the deaths and risks presented by COVID-19 (coronavirus) are nothing compared to those caused by seasonal flu and diseases catalysed by endemic poverty – something which the global economic collapse is sure to make worse by orders of magnitude. He also expressed dismay that, so far at least, no one had stood up to the enforced lockdowns and fought against their freedoms been taken away.

While it can often be hard to take John McAfee seriously, there is every reason to believe he is spot-on with his assessment of the current situation. As we reported earlier today, the IMF has said it expects the COVID-19 lockdown-induced economic crash to be the worst in 90 years – i.e. since the Great Depression – while the UK government is bracing for the most severe recession in 300 years!
Given these terrifying projections, it’s virtually impossible to argue that the COVID-19 virus, even if it had been left to burn with only minimal mitigation measures implemented (pretty much as the Swedes and Belarusians have decided to do), would have caused anywhere near as many deaths or as much suffering as the economic catastrophe caused by the lockdowns is now all but guaranteed to do.
And, given this reality, we have to agree with McAfee, it is quite shocking that the population has so readily submitted to the most draconian and damaging restrictions and limitations on personal freedoms ever imposed in most countries.
As we reported yesterday, it is also extremely worrying that companies in the tech sector, like Malta-based Chiliz, are aiding this sleepwalk into a 1984-style Orwellian nightmare, by developing products that actively promote and enable a frighteningly segregated police state.
