NEW ZEALAND REGULATOR WARNS SKYCITY FOR PROMOTING MALTA-BASED ONLINE CASINO

Published

on

Auckland, New Zealand

Casino operator SkyCity has received a formal warning from New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), for promoting its Malta-based online casino.

The DIA found SkyCity had breached section 16 of the Gambling Act 2003 by sending emails to customers enrolled in its loyalty program, informing them that the online casino was operating normally.

SkyCity has said it only emailed customers to update them on the situation regarding the COVID-19 crisis, and that it believes such communication does not constitute a breach of the Gambling Act, though it will respect the views of the DIA.

Under New Zealand law, it is illegal for operators to promote overseas gambling, and such a breach could be met with a $10K NZD fine. However, in this case regulators decided SkyCity had not breached the Act intentionally, and instead only issued a formal warning.

The DIA has said it will “keep an eye on the operator and take any future breaches seriously.”

AYO.NEWS says:

Even if SkyCity had been hit with the maximum fine, we doubt a $10K NZD (approx. €6.8K) fine would have hurt the operator, but the tone of the warning has sent a clear message that the regulator won’t tolerate breaches of the Gambling Act, no matter how minor.

SkyCity’s online casino was launched by Malta-based Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) in August 2019, and is aimed at the New Zealand market.

THE MILL ADVENTURE AND CASINOBUD SHAKE THINGS UP WITH NEW SOCIAL CASINO CONCEPT

Published

on

Gaming platform provider The Mill Adventure and Casinobud have teamed up to launch a new casino syndicate product.

The new product, Casinobud.com, launched in Finland in July and went live in other European markets last month. It claims to be the world’s first proposition offering online syndicate betting on video slots and live casino products.

At Casinobud.com players can play casino games together in group sessions, pooling money to aim for collaborative wins. Users can either play with a group of friends, or other Casinobud players online. One member of the group takes charge as captain, and the others are able to follow the progress, chat, and interact via a sophisticated interface. Sessions can also be streamed live via Twitch, giving non-users the chance to watch the action.

Discussing the new product Co-founder and CEO of The Mill Adventure, Dario Arruda, said:

“Casino players have been craving that social interaction, and Casinobud offers them exactly that. I definitely believe this industry first product has a huge future in the casino vertical, and can’t wait to see how it evolves over time. Together with Casinobud, I believe we have created something new and unique here, while making sure it’s done in the right way.

“Our mission at The Mill Adventure is to provide world-class and innovative iGaming platforms, solutions and services that allow companies – from startups to top-tier brands – to remain relevant to their players. We’re doing this by inventing new concepts, operating with an expert team and improving efficiency in all sectors.

“Casinobud is a fantastic example of our commitment to this mission, and I’m thrilled to showcase this cutting-edge concept as part of our ever-growing portfolio of innovations.”

While CEO of Casinobud, Fredrik Sehlstedt, added:

“The concept itself has existed in other verticals within gaming like sports betting and lottery for some time, both in physical shops and online to a certain extent, but it has not yet been made available for all product verticals such as online casino.

“This is a very exciting moment for us and the cooperation we have had with The Mill Adventure, from the planning stage to execution, has exceeded our expectations.

“The strong technical experience and knowledge from The Mill Adventure, and our product vision, was a perfect and essential match to reach the mutual goal for this exciting, yet challenging feature to become a reality.

“What we have launched is just the tip of the iceberg. Together, we are exploring new features, as well as new market opportunities. We have some very exciting times ahead of us and expect to make a big impact on the online casino industry.”

AYO.NEWS says:

Online casino has been crying out for some truly groundbreaking new concept for years. Will this social syndicate model be it? Well, the COVID-19 crisis has definitely increased the demand for both online gaming and online social interaction, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this takes off.

The speakers include Anders Karlsen (CEO, Coolbet), Zeno Ossko (CEO, BetWarrior), Sergey Berezhnoy (Chief Product Officer, Parimatch), Jonathan Cassar (Head of Sportsbook, Betsson), and Edvinas Subacius (Chief Data Officer, Rootz).

Trustly’s Head of Commercial Strategy Ciaran O’Malley will share his thoughts on innovations in open banking, while mkodo’s Managing Director Stuart Godfree will offer his insights on what the upcoming iOS14 and Android 11 releases will mean for gaming brands.

The Global Gambling Track, sponsored by iwinBack, will look at the latest developments in Africa, Asia, Australia, the CIS, and India to identify where the next big betting & gaming markets will emerge. The speaker roster includes a host of experts with in-depth experience of those markets, including Tyrone Dobbin (Managing Director – Africa, Sportingbet),

Anton Rublevsky (СEO Parimatch International), Michael Charlton (Asia Pacific Director, GVC Group), Minja Bolesnikov (CEO, MaxBet), and Maxim Afanasyev (CPO, Ligastavok).

As the business day gets underway in Latin America, attention will turn to that region with four panels covering regulation, expanding sportsbook offerings beyond football, payments, and marketing. The sessions will feature insights from a selection of senior executives, including JD Duarte (CEO, Betcris), Fernanda Sainz (CMO LatAm, Caliente Interactive), Gonzalo Pérez (CEO, Apuesta Total), and Rodrigo Afanador (CEO, Zamba.co).

The Responsible Affiliates in Gambling (RAiG) Compliance Track will examine some of the crucial issues affecting the affiliate industry, with input from the UK Gambling Commission, the Advertising Standards Authority, the Betting and Gaming Council, and law firm Mishcon de Reya.

In addition to the conference content, attendees will have access to a programme of workshops and themed networking roundtables. It includes an in-depth update on the forthcoming regulatory changes in the UK and a masterclass on the art of sponsorship activation, together with networking sessions for the Dutch and German markets, women in gaming, and the tribal gaming sector.

Delegates who missed the opening day will also be able to use the event platform’s on-demand feature to catch up on Tuesday’s conference content, including a keynote session with Sportradar founder & CEO Carsten Koerl and DraftKings Co-Founder, Chairman & CEO Jason Robins that created a real buzz across the industry.

The session saw Koerl predict the opening of new regulated markets as the world emerges from the pandemic. He said:

“This will probably accelerate market openings and provide opportunities. We see this already in the US. It is still a very painful process state by state, but we see the likelihood that this is accelerating much better than we saw last year. So we see a positive trend here that is very much driven by cash demand and taxes.”

Robins, meanwhile, observed that during the lockdown, stock markets had started to look beyond the next quarter due to the confusion about what short-term results would mean. He explained:

“[They] said ‘alright, which companies could be better positioned than they were coming into this and whenever this ends’. And a lot of narrative started to develop around the potential for states which were going to be facing major budget gaps to potentially look at legalising online sports betting and maybe even igaming.”

Tuesday’s content also included the Sports Betting in Focus Track, sponsored by betradar, and Payment Expert Track, sponsored by Neosurf.

SBC Summit Barcelona – Digital takes place over four days this week (8 – 11 September) and features four main zones – Sports Betting, Casino & Gaming, Payments & Compliance, and Affiliate & Marketing – each of which have their own conference tracks, networking roundtables and interactive expo halls.
