GLMS REPORTS SHARP RISE IN SUSPICIOUS BETTING ALERTS DURING 2020, DESPITE PANDEMIC

The Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) has reported a sharp rise in suspicious betting alerts during the course of 2020. 

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic playing havoc with the sporting calendar last year, the Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) registered a 41% year-on-year increase in suspicious betting alerts. 

In total, the GLMS sent out 1,113 alerts to its members, of which 936 were generated before matches started, 27 during play, and 150 at the end of matches. 

Football accounted for the lion’s share of member alerts, at 832, followed by 134 for basketball, 55 for ice hockey, and 50 for tennis. Esports, volleyball, handball, table tennis, badminton, American football, baseball, and sepak also generated a handful of alerts each. 

Europe suffered the most with 727 alerts, while Asia had 191, South America 90, North America 64, Africa 23, and Oceania 7. 

Most alerts, some 715 were classified as green or minor, while 217 were yellow, and 86 ranked as red – which is the most serious level and includes suspicious odds changes, or tip offs about match fixing. 95 alerts were classed as ‘others’, and included requests for information from members and partners.

The organisation also sent out 162 alerts to its partners, along with bodies like FIFA, UEFA, local gaming authorities, and local and international law enforcement authorities.
