GOOGLE PLAY TO ALLOW GAMBLING APPS IN 15 MORE COUNTRIES FROM MARCH

Google has confirmed it will be allowing gambling apps in its Google Play store in 15 additional countries from 1 March 2021, including the United States. 

The updated policy will allow real-money gambling apps covering online casino games, lotteries, sports betting, and Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), subject to the apps complying with restrictions and all Google Play policies. 

Google Play has permitted real-money gambing apps in a handful of countries, including the UK, Ireland, France, and Brazil for a number of years now, but from March, operators in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the United States will also get the greenlight.

By downloading Android apps from Google Play, customers will have an alternative to downloading them directly from the operators’ websites – which can be a hassle, and require the bypassing of phone security settings and necessitate manual updates. 

Whether or not Google will be insisting on specific design and UX rules, in the same vein as Apple’s Design Guidelines for container apps, is not yet known.
