OVERWOLF RAISES $52.5M TO UNLOCK MODDING FOR GAME DEVELOPERS AND PUBLISHERS
Overwolf CEO & Co-Founder, Uri Marchand
Overwolf, the all-in-one platform that enables creators to build, distribute, and monetize in-game apps and mods, today announced a $52.5 million USD Series C round and the launch of CurseForge Core, a User Generated Content (UGC) as a service platform.
CurseForge Core provides an SDK for game developers that integrates into the game itself and functions as a gateway for users to discover and install mods in-game, across all platforms and storefronts.
The round was co-led by Griffin Gaming Partners and Insight Partners with participation from investors including Ubisoft, Warner Music Group, Meg Whitman, Gen.G Co-Founder, Kevin Chou, and existing investors Marker, Intel Capital and Liberty Media. The funding will be used to boost development firepower dedicated to creating services for creators. It will further be used to create more opportunities and vehicles to invest in, and with, the in-game creator community.
In 2020, as part of its commitment to empower in-game creators, Overwolf acquired CurseForge from Twitch, the biggest repository of mods for video games including top titles like World of Warcraft and Minecraft. CurseForge and Overwolf have supported creator communities for over 15 years with a combined platform that includes over 30,000 creators, 90,000 mods and add-ons, and 18 million monthly users. Overwolf has experienced 300% growth in the last year as the market for content around games rises.
“We are at a new user-generated content inflection point, and the strong growth of gaming lies largely in the hands of “in-game creators,” a term we coined to categorize this new generation of in-game app creators and mod authors. The more content and customizability a game has, the more likely a gamer will keep experiencing its content and by that extending the longevity of the game and generating more value for game developers and publishers in the long run,” commented Uri Marchand, Overwolf CEO and Co-Founder. “By offering CurseForge Core, we are accelerating the community-created content movement by enabling publishers to easily integrate mods safely and seamlessly into their existing and new games. With the backing of the most notable investors in the space, we are confident that the Overwolf platform will lay the groundwork for a new era of AAA game creation.”
Overwolf believes in a future in which the community can participate with the game developer in creating new, moderated, and safe game experiences. This benefits game developers, as game development costs continue to rise, adding community firepower can be critical. With CurseForge Core, Overwolf manages content moderation, UGC-related live ops, and creator payment, enabling game developers and studios to access community-created content easily without incurring additional costs. CurseForge Core offers the following benefits:
- Cross-Platform Modding — Integrate Overwolf’s open-source SDKs and plugins to let players discover and install mods in-game, across all platforms and storefronts.
- Full Analytics Dashboard — Get a full modding usage dashboard to learn which mods are popular. Gather insights on what content players find enjoyable, which genres are trending, and much more.
- Safe and Secure Moderation — Each mod submitted is scanned for viruses or inappropriate content. Defined policies and guidelines on what is permitted are enforced by Overwolf, and only authorized content is published.
- Creator Relations and Payment — CurseForge supports creators with Author Rewards Program, fund investments, developer contests, and hackathons.
“Similar to how developers use Unity to build a game, we see Overwolf as the framework for everything UGC related to games. Overwolf allows for one of the only means of monetization for the thousands of creators, in turn, this translates to increased engagement for the publishers and more content for gamers. Services like Overwolf set the stage for the industry to see a new generation of user-generated content and we are excited to invest in the leading company moving this space forward,” commented Nick Tuosto, Co-Founder of Griffin Gaming Partners and Managing Director at LionTree.
“We’ve been following UGC in gaming for many years and believe Overwolf has established itself as a leader in this category,” said Teddie Wardi, Managing Director at Insight Partners. “AAA game studios will want to allow creators to build and express themselves, and Overwolf is positioned as the platform to make this possible by ensuring that creators are recognized for their contributions, and easily integrating creations into games. Overwolf has proved themselves to be strong champions of the creator community and we look forward to helping them scale up in 2021.”
“Overwolf is developing the holy grail of frameworks for UGC for both publishers and in-game creators. Enabling all major publishers like us, to allow the creation of mods in a safe, secure, authorized, and profitable manner; is a game changer for all creators and IP holders,” said Oscar Navarro, Head of Corporate Development for Ubisoft.

The limitless potential for user generated content to enhance and prolong the life of games is well understood by most gamers, but Overwolf is one of the first companies to appreciate what is needed to harness its commercial potential. Given the impressive funding it has just secured, plenty of investors are waking up and smelling the coffee too.

American NBA star Kevin Durant and his agent, Rich Kleiman, have invested in New York-based esports organisation Andbox.
The Brooklyn Nets player and his agent made the investment through their firm Thirty Five Ventures, and will join the Andbox team as investors and creative partners. This will include Durant and Thirty Five Ventures collaborating on the creation of entertainment content and new merch collections.
“The passion that New York sports fans have has really hit home with me,” said Kevin Durant, two-time champion and president of Thirty Five Ventures. “Andbox is bringing that same energy to esports here, and that’s something Thirty Five Ventures is very excited to be a part of.”
“There is no bigger stage in the world to compete on than here in New York, and that’s what drives superstars like Kevin Durant here and thankfully to us, just as it did with Clayster, a back-to-back Call of Duty champion who joined us this offseason,” said Farzam Kamel, Co-founder and President, Andbox. “The New York Tri-State area is the country’s largest market and a global hub for practically everything from sports and media to youth culture and fashion, yet it’s been long overlooked in the gaming industry. We’re changing that with Andbox and promise to keep delivering for New York’s fans and elevate New York esports on the world stage.”
Other Andbox investors to-date have included Michael B. Jordan, David Levy (former President of Turner), Jeff Raider (Co-founder and CEO of Harry’s), Neil Blumenthal (Co-founder and CEO of Warby Parker), Adam Leibsohn (Co-founder and COO of GIPHY), and Roham Gharegozlou (Founder and CEO of Dapper Labs).
Andbox owns and operates Call of Duty League franchise New York Subliners, and Overwatch League franchise New York Excelsior (NYXL), along with a VALORANT squad.
Proud to announce our newest investment in @andbox_official @subliners to continue the growth of esports in New York and beyond https://t.co/wwvOrhtJsM

Though we’ve seen the United States military, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard, firmly embrace esports, both for official recruitment and informal social purposes, collaborations like this are still pretty rare in Europe. Saying that, if it’s successful, we’re sure it will lead to many more collaborations, perhaps with the esports clubs of other European forces too?
Nasdaq-listed Super League Gaming has announced a continuation of its existing partnership with Topgolf Entertainment Group.

“Topgolf continues to be one of Super League’s most important and exciting partners,” said Matt Edelman, Chief Commercial Officer at Super League Gaming. “We have a shared belief in celebrating play through fun, accessible, competitive experiences that are brought to life through premium content. The WGT Live Series airs on WGT Twitch and YouTube channels. Additional programming and more information available here.
AYO.NEWS says:
Nothing says a partnership has been successful like a major extension, so this is great news for Super League Gaming, Topgolf, and of course, golf fans the world over. One thing is for sure, with the COVID-19 crisis still rumbling on, and the very real possibility that mutations will cause more lockdowns, Super League’s investment in its fully-remote Virtualis Studios is looking like a very smart move!

They’re the exact partner we were looking for’
While Head of Partnerships at Oddin, Marek Suchar, added: “We are extremely grateful to find a partner like BetX that understands the potential of esports and wants to innovate their sportsbook offering. The iFrame integration was seamless and we’re excited to see our product live. The Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) has secured exclusive streaming rights for the country’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) league, Elgiganten Ligaen.
DR’s deal with the league’s operator, Dust2.dk, includes all three finals of the league, which will be shown on the broadcaster’s streaming platform DR TV. Although agreement will also see the league’s play-off matches leave Twitch for DR TV, the corporation has said they will remain free to watch.
Notably, the contract represents Elgiganten Ligaen’s first-ever television rights deal.
Similar to other European public broadcasters, most famously the UK’s BBC, DR is primarily funded from a license fee, amounting to around $400 USD per year per household.
AYO.NEWS says:
This is great news for Elgiganten Ligaen, and the fact that a major public broadcaster is willing to cough up for exclusive rights shows just how popular esports now are in Europe.
