SWEDISH GAMBLING AUTHORITY LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE SELF-EXCLUSION SCHEME

Published

on

The Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) has launched a campaign to promote its Spelpaus.se self-exclusion service.

Spelpaus.se has been running since the re-regulated Swedish gambling market launched on 1 January 2019, but the SGA says not enough players are aware of the service, especially considering the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

The new campaign, which features seven different messages, spans television, websites, and social media, and will run for at least four weeks.

Discussing the campaign SGA communications manager, Anders Sims, said:

“After just under a year, half of all players knew about Spelpaus.se. It’s good, but not good enough.

“With this investment, we mainly want to inform that Spelpaus.se exists, but also pay attention to people of different behaviours that can be a sign of gambling problems, for example that you are playing in secret.”

The awareness campaign comes as Swedish-license holders are fighting against planned new restrictions, including a SEK 5,000 weekly deposit limit for online casino games and slots, and a set time limit, which are set to come into force on 2 July and last until the end of 2020.

AYO.NEWS says:

Only last week the ongoing Swedish drama took another turn, with local media reporting Minister for Public Administration, Ardalan Shekarabi, had been accused of lying about an increase in online gambling during the COVID-19 crisis to gain support for the emergency restrictions.

Given that the COVID-19 crisis itself seems to be subsiding, at least as far as the first wave of infections is concerned, it seems ludicrous that the emergency restrictions are still set to be introduced in July. Again, it just confirms our suspicions that the whole thing is actually ideologically motivated, with anti-gambling politicians like Shekarabi taking advantage of the crisis to damage the industry.

NETENT REVENUE SURGES 37% IN Q2 AS LOCKDOWNS HAVE POSITIVE EFFECT

Published

Online casino supplier NetEnt has reported a 37% rise in revenue for the second quarter of 2020.

NetEnt generated SEK 573m ($63.2m USD) in the quarter, up 37% year-on-year. Including its Red Tiger subsidiary, on a proforma basis, revenue was up 15%. EBITDA was up 49% over 2019, at SEK 299m, while earnings after tax came in at SEK 88m, down 27%.

The company’s strong second-quarter results bring its revenue for the first half of 2020 to SEK 1.09bn – up 30% on 2019’s figures. EBITDA for the period was SEK 528m, up 33%, but earnings after tax fell by 29%.

Q2 was busy for NetEnt, with the supplier entering regulated markets in Switzerland, Croatia, and Colombia, a record 19 new slot games released (9 from NetEnt and 10 from Red Tiger), and Evolution Gaming offering SEK 19.6bn to acquire NetEnt.

Reflecting on the results NetEnt CEO, Therese Hillman, said:

“The coronavirus pandemic continues to impact people and companies around the world. There are signs that the rapid changes in consumer behavior caused by the pandemic will further speed up the digitalization of a number of industries, including entertainment such as gaming. Just like in other online industries, the major lockdowns in some of our big markets (UK, US, Italy and Germany) led to a positive effect on revenues in April and May, followed by a more normal pattern in June as those economies gradually opened up.

“Hard work and transformational steps taken in the past year are now starting to create value. We remain fully committed to continue on this path and with growth engines such as USA, Red Tiger and Live Casino, I feel that we are well positioned to continue delivering profitable growth and strong cash flows for the rest of this year and onwards.”

AYO.NEWS says:

2020 might be the worst year in living memory for many businesses, but there’s no doubt that things are looking up for NetEnt. If the acquisition by Evolution Gaming goes ahead, we’ve no doubt the new business will be in an even stronger position to make the most of the rapidly expanding US online gaming market.

Golden Nugget Online Gaming has signed a deal with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and Ojibwa Casino to offer online casino in the state of Michigan.

Already offering online casino in New Jersey, and planning to enter Pennsylvania, the operator also recently announced its intention to go public.

Golden Nugget will also be launching its online sportsbook alongside its casino in Michigan.

Commenting on the news president of Golden Nugget Online Gaming, Thomas Winter, said:

“Golden Nugget Online Gaming is thrilled to partner with the Ojibwa Casino to provide casino players in Michigan with a premium online casino and sportsbook experience.”

While Keweenaw Bay Indian Community president, Chris Swartz, added:

“We are excited to partner with Golden Nugget to bring online casino and sports betting to the state of Michigan.

“Working with a strong brand will be a perfect complement to our brand new casino in Marquette, as well as our casino in Baraga.”

AYO.NEWS says:

The COVID-19 crisis has severely impacted the US land-based casino sector, and with the pandemic still worsening in the country, looks set to do so for some time yet. This, coupled with the disruption to traditional sports, had caused a significant shift towards the previously neglected online casino vertical.

Earlier this week DraftKings launched its standalone casino apps in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, while in June the operator launched a casino app in New Jersey

DRAFTKINGS LAUNCHES CASINO APP IN PENNSYLVANIA AND WEST VIRGINIA

DraftKings has launched its standalone casino app in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Along with proprietary content, the casino app offers players games from IGT, Scientific Games, and Slingo, and live dealer action from the Evolution Gaming-powered DraftKings studio.

In West Virginia, the casino product suite has been launched in association with Hollywood Casino at Charlestown Races.

The rollout in Pennsylvania and West Virginia follow month’s launch of a standalone DraftKings casino app in New Jersey

DraftKings says it is ready to launch its casino app in other states as and when local regulations permit.

AYO.NEWS says:

Until the COVID-19 crisis hit, it seems most in the gaming industry assumed land-based casinos and sports betting would continue to dominate the US scene for a long time. But now, with the decimation of bricks and mortar casinos, and the uncertainty surrounding traditional sports, operators are clearly investing heavily in online casino (and esports).

Reflecting this change, just days ago we reported that Roar Digital, the joint MGM Resorts International-GVC Holdings venture that operates online gaming platform BetMGM, announced it had secured an additional $250 million, meaning it is now funded to the tune of $450 million.

PRAGMATIC PLAY EYES AFRICA, APPOINTING SOLOMON GODWIN AS CONTINENT MANAGER

Published

iGaming content provider Pragmatic Play has appointed Solomon Godwin as Continent Manager for Africa.

Godwin will be responsible for growing Pragmatic Play’s network of partners across the region and boosting its reputation with the help of the supplier’s multi-product portfolio.

As part of its strategy to expand into regulated markets worldwide, Gibraltar and Malta-based  Pragmatic Play also recently appointed Victor Arias as VP Latin America, and is making significant hires in regional hubs around the world.

Commenting on the news VP Malta at Pragmatic Play, Lena Yasir, said:

“We are delighted to bolster our growing senior team with the hiring of Solomon. Having regional leaders allows us to accelerate our expansion through a sizeable presence in the region and we’re thrilled to have Solomon on board.”

While Godwin himself added:

“Pragmatic Play has a fantastic reputation for creating immersive iGaming experiences. It’s exciting to be joining a company with such a focused global vision. There is a clear roadmap ahead for success and I am looking forward to driving the supplier’s growth across the regulated territories in Africa.”

Pragmatic Play currently releases up to four new slot titles monthly, and offers an extensive range of Live Casino and Bingo products through its multi-vertical offering, which is all available through a single API integration.

AYO.NEWS says:

With the mature European markets increasingly hamstrung by saturation and politically-driven regulatory constraints, Africa and Latin America are rapidly growing in importance to both suppliers and operators.

Staying in Africa, a couple of weeks ago Betway came to the rescue of Cricket South Africa (CSA), by stepping into the breach and sponsoring its Test and One Day International (ODI) series, after Standard Bank bailed in response to corruption allegations.

ICE LONDON 2021 POSTPONED DUE TO WORSENING COVID-19 CRISIS

Published

on

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has forced Clarion Gaming to postpone the ICE London 2021 Gaming Show.

Though reports were circulating earlier today, Clarion Gaming has now officially confirmed that the world’s premier iGaming trade show, ICE London, has been postponed from February until 20-22 April 2021, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

Clarion Gaming was scheduled to hold a press conference tomorrow afternoon, but that has now been cancelled. The organisers said that, given the ongoing uncertainty, it would be tough to convince exhibitors to commit to a February event, and it would be challenging to hold the show safely while adhering to the current public health restrictions.

There’s also the not so small matter that London’s Excel Centre, which is the host venue of ICE London, is still currently re-purposed as a COVID-19 emergency hospital – and will likely remain so as the threat of a second wave of infections increases.

Earlier this week, Reed Exhibitions also confirmed that G2E Las Vegas, due to be held in Las Vegas in October 2020, has been cancelled.

AYO.NEWS says:

Given the fact that cities, regions, and countries around the world are re-imposing lockdowns, and there are increasing signs that a second wave of infections is taking hold, this announcement shouldn’t be surprising.

And, if we are totally honest, with experts in numerous countries now saying the crisis could last well into 2021, or even beyond, it must be doubtful that ICE London will happen in April.

Those organisers who are still planning to hold international industry events, like SiGMA in Malta, which has committed to going ahead with its flagship expo in November 2020, are looking increasingly out of touch with reality.

As we previously reported, iGaming NEXT Malta has already confirmed it will not be holding any international events for the rest of 2020 due to the crisis.

MARKETING “SOFTLY” — WHY SOFT POWER MATTERS IN THE WORLD OF MARKETING

mm

Published

on

I bet you own a pair of jeans. Nearly everyone does.

But how did this denim garment become such a dominant piece in wardrobes across the world?

The Soft Power of Jeans

The jeans were designed to serve as workwear in the late 19th century. However, this “uniform” that was initially worn by American farmers and miners has not merely become a timeless fashion statement. The jeans became a classic symbol of the American West.

Before World War II, the jeans were exclusively worn by Americans and came to acquire certain ideological connotations attached to the West. Gradually, after the end of the war, they started getting popular in the Eastern part of the globe. People began viewing jeans as a symbol of independence and democracy simply because liberal Americans wore them. Buying and wearing jeans was an act of mild rebellion that brought people closer to being American.

This small story illustrates how a piece of clothing became something that served as a tangible projection of the so-called “soft power” of the American nation — a power hidden behind the American ideology.

Soft vs. Hard Power

American political scientist Joseph Nye coined the term “soft power” in the late 1980s, and it is since then widely used in the realm of international politics. Nye defines soft power as the ability of a country to persuade and make others act in line with its interests without resorting to force or coercion.

The whole concept of soft power revolves around the idea that countries can draw on their non-coercive, ideological power to cement their position in the world.

In fact, after the end of the Cold War, US fundamentals such as liberalism and free speech were sought after on an international scale. The US established its position in the world as a global superpower not just due to its financial and military power, but also the appeal of the soft values it came to represent. This “soft power” is what made the US seem legitimate in the eyes of the international community, resulting in less resistance to its wishes.

This US example by no means shows my political views. I don’t mumble “God Bless America” during my sleep. Neither do I own a picture-perfect American house and have two kids running around in my perfectly trimmed garden. I’m just saying that people wore jeans because they thought highly of the Americans. And this persuasive power played a considerable part in shaping the status quo as it is today.

Marketing Softly

The concepts of “soft” and “hard” power can be applied to the world of business, or more specifically to the realm of marketing, which also entails not one, but two separate activities, the so-called “soft marketing” and the “hard marketing.”

It’s no secret that companies want their brands to be powerful. Hence, it’s only natural to speak about power when you discuss marketing strategy.

Hard marketing typically refers to a direct, more aggressive act of selling, whereas soft marketing is defined as something that has a persuasive nature and organically leads to the desired act — which in this case is “selling” a product.

Essentially, soft marketing is about brand building. It’s a subtle, low-pressure method that focuses on developing relationships rather than aggressively pitching your product to a disconnected audience.

Think about it — aspiring authors who have just published their first book have to tirelessly advertise it to get some coverage and generate sales. But do you remember J.K. Rowling advertising her next Harry Potter book? No.

In fact, fans around the world have been begging her to write more. She didn’t have to resort to “hard marketing” techniques due to the relationship she’s built with her audience, and the trust levels that organically come with this relationship. This “soft marketing” not only made J.K. Rowling who she is today, but also earned her a fortune, contrary to the prevailing belief that money only comes with “hard marketing.”

But what makes soft marketing so powerful?

When you create an organic relationship with your audience and learn what they need, you can “suggest” your product in a way that it sounds as “friendly advice.”

This is much better perceived than a direct sales pitch, since you took the time to form a connection before giving that pitch. Audiences today are overexposed to an endless information vacuum, and they are bombarded by sales pitches wherever they go — whether they’re watching a movie, or browsing the internet.

The sales pitches today are even more aggressive. Businesses won’t let you in peace until you finally make that purchase (thanks retargeting). People are seeking for an emotional connection with the brand prior making the purchase. And that is where “soft marketing” comes in.

The PlayAttack Example: Play & Attack

When we were designing our marketing strategy here at PlayAttack, we tried to find the right balance between soft and hard marketing techniques and mediums of communication.

Ironically, even the name of our brand resonates with this whole idea. The “Play” component acts as an umbrella for the soft side of our business — the ideology behind it, the human-centric approach, the humor, and our tone of voice. And this is all present in our video reports that we use as the main medium to reach our target audience and interact with them in what we like to believe is the “entertaining”  way to do things.

On the “Attack” side, we use our “heavy artillery” to achieve our business goals, but it’s not my intention to bore you with that.

Final Thoughts

Even though the hard marketing camp ties everything to quantifiable metrics and likes being able to measure the revenue stemming from each marketing activity, soft marketing is essential as it drives engagement and increases awareness. While soft conversions don’t always lead to direct sales, they don’t lack value as they bring further exposure to your message.

Even military strategists agree that “winning the hearts and minds” of the enemy through soft power could be more effective in the long run than bombarding them with superior force.
